Fort Stevens Day 1

The first stop on our trip was at the Astoria Maritime Museum. There we learned about the maritime history of the area. We learned about the Graveyard of the Pacific, maritime jobs, native traders, maps through history, and WWII ships. We also toured the Coast Guard lightship.

After arriving at camp and settling in to our yurts, we went to the beach to run off some energy. There we learned that running on the beach is hard, but skipping is fun. We learned that a frisbee can entertain an entire 7th grade class for hours. We learned about crabs, birds, and water depth.

After dinner and the beach, it was back to work. With the rain coming down in true Oregon style, we learned that you can put 24 7th graders in one yurt. We read several scenes from Cyrano and learned that 7th graders can fall in love with books written in 1897.

And that ended our first day at camp. Everyone was wet, happy, and exhausted so off to bed we went!
